Why the windshield can be part of a safety-system repair

Many vehicles mount a forward camera near the windshield. It may support lane alerts, collision warnings, automatic braking, sign recognition, or high-beam control. Replacing the glass can change the camera’s position or view, so correct glass, mounting, scanning, and calibration procedures can all matter.

When calibration may be required

Calibration may follow windshield replacement, camera removal, certain collision or suspension repairs, alignment work, or a manufacturer procedure. It may use stationary targets, a controlled road process, or both. Absence of a warning light does not prove calibration is unnecessary.

Questions before authorizing windshield work

Provide the VIN when requested so camera, rain sensor, heat, acoustic layer, head-up display, and antenna options can be checked.

  • Does the vehicle require a pre-scan, post-scan, or calibration?
  • Will calibration occur on site or at another facility?
  • Does the glass support the original sensors and display features?
  • What conditions could prevent successful calibration?
  • Will scan and calibration results be included with the invoice?

What to review after installation

Inspect for distortion in the driver’s view, confirm trim and camera covers are secure, and ask about cure, washing, or driving restrictions. Report new warnings or changed driver-assistance behavior rather than testing it with deliberate close following or abrupt maneuvers.

Driver assistance does not replace the driver

Continue using direct observation, mirrors, safe following distance, and normal braking judgment. Do not drive when damage, distortion, loose glass, or an obstructed camera prevents a clear view. Never cover, reposition, or attempt to align the camera by hand.
